I Use NovusBoard Every Day. Nobody Else Does Yet.

NovusBoard is live and in production. It has exactly one user — me. Here's why I built it that way, and why I'm in no rush to pretend otherwise.

Most mornings start with a Dr Pepper and NovusBoard open on the screen. Not because I'm testing it — because I'm using it. It's the work-order system I built, and right now I'm the only person running real work through it.

I'll say that part plainly, because it's the kind of thing a company usually buries: NovusBoard is live, it's in production, and it has no paying customers yet.

One user. Me.

That's not where I'm embarrassed to be. It's where I wanted to start.

Here's the logic. I spent years as a diesel mechanic before I wrote a line of this. Every shop I worked in ran the same way — a whiteboard, a stack of sticky notes, and a spreadsheet somebody set up two years ago that nobody fully trusts. Jobs slipped. Parts got used and never logged. Nobody could say for sure how many hours went into last week's job. I lived that, daily.

So when I built NovusBoard, I built it for that exact problem — and then I made myself the first person who has to live with the result. If something annoys me, I feel it. If a task takes three clicks that should take one, I'm the one clicking three times. That's a kind of quality control you can't fake from the outside.

Using it myself is how I know where parts and labor belong. They go on the work order itself — the parts, the labor rate, the time entries, the whole picture of the job, right there on the board. Not buried in a separate module you have to go dig through. I built it that way because when I was the guy at the counter with a customer waiting, I didn't have time to click through three screens to tell them what they owed.

I'd never have landed that detail by imagining it. I got it right because I needed it.

Being your own first customer has a blind spot, though, and I'll name it. I run my shop the way I run my shop. Another operator does things differently, and there are workflows I haven't hit yet because I'm one person with one set of habits. That's exactly why the next step is getting it into other shops' hands — to find the edges I can't see from where I'm standing.

But I'd rather start from a tool I actually use every day than one I built, demoed once, and never touched again.

So that's where it stands. NovusBoard is real, it's running, and the person depending on it most is me. No customer list to wave around yet. When that changes, I'll say so — with real numbers, not a banner.

For now, I'm customer number one. I'd rather earn the second one with something I trust than something I just shipped.
